Lights, Camera, Action is a group exhibition featuring the work of April Friges, Keith Lemley, Liz Nielsen, and Lindsay Packer. Sharing an interest in light as a medium and as an element of their processes, the four artists explore dichotomies—light and shadow, real and imaginary, image and object, seen and unseen—and the gray places where they meet.
Working in the darkroom, April Friges and Liz Nielsen take traditional photographic processes and eliminate the camera. Friges uses photosensitive paper to create images using the subtractive color model. Her surfaces of cyan, magenta, yellow, and secondary combinations of red, green and blue arrive at color prints in their purest form. Friges then transforms the developed paper into sculptural forms and two-dimensional pieces that push the boundaries of the photograph’s traditionally flat, rectangular format and explore the intersection of image and object.
Using hand-made negative collages and chromogenic paper, Liz Nielsen “paints” with found light. While her photograms refer to representational imagery and their titles certainly encourage this interpretation, the abstracted combinations of shapes and colors are purely constructed images. Nielsen’s playful and luminous work contradict the popular understanding of photography as an accurate documentation of reality.
Keith Lemley’s installations combine neon, LEDs, and natural materials into a signature minimal aesthetic. In his work, light is transformed into an object and catalyst for a physical reaction. Constructing an immersive environment, Lemley connects visual perception to personal memory and thoughts rendering the unseen visible.
Using light and found materials, Lindsay Packer creates compositions of RGB color that question the divisions between analog and digital ways of seeing. Ephemeral in nature, her installations are temporary interventions activated by movement, chance, and improvisation. Her CMYK color photographs expand upon her site-specific practice and explore color, luminosity, and interactions between material and perception.
Using light to play with visual perception, Friges, Lemley, Nielsen, and Packer create work that exists in liminal spaces, questioning the rigidity of strict categorization. Straddling photography, sculpture, and installation, their work is full of inherent tensions inviting the viewer to look closer, to be engaged; the exhibition asks the viewer to complete the call, “Lights, Camera, … Action.”
