Red to Green, Fleeting

Projektraum Gallery presents its second member exhibition, Red to Green, fleeting. Inspired by her personal experience of Syrian refugees in Hungary, Katalin Tesch paints watercolor compositions of refugee children as she first encountered them in a crowded Budapest railway station on their way to refugee camps. The scenes are drawn from photographs and memory and take red and green hues to convey positive and negative senses at the same time, of blood and hope, or life and death.
In more abstract form, Elizabeth O’Connor also applies the same colors to represent her emotional states towards the narrative of home. Her paintings are abstract in shape, rhythm, and composition, but able to express the urgency of environmental issues, as in the painting High Tide. In contrast, she illustrates a safe, quiet, comfortable and homey place, through the green of the painting Upstairs.
The third artist in this group show, Ariel Kitch is interested in manipulating found images and using printmaking process to expose tensions in the same compositions of repeated and duplicated prints of variant colors. In her Bleached Coral, she found the tension between the red-green theme and explores the way the tones complement but also cancel each other's essence.
The spatial ambient green-blue and red-purple paintings of Sara Murado take it a step further in this exploration of projected emotion/idea onto a color field. Left with the bare essential of a floating silhouette on three canvases of three colors, we have the opportunity to meditate on how the work move us in the most intimate ways, through the contemplation of our psychological associations.
Four international New York artists, all Kunstraum members, adopt the complementary colors red and green to depict their personal stories. A tour of emotions unified not only by the red-green paradigm but also by the fleeting opportunity for the visitor to look into the making of an idea when perceiving art, the generation of interpretation.
Projektraum is a new initiative by Kunstraum that features solo and group exhibitions by member artists throughout the year. It is based on the active contribution of the members and their need for experimental space to display their work.
