Borrowed from Jacques Lacan’s text of the same title The Split between the Eye and the Gaze includes works by ten young New York based artists. Lacan’s text was published 1964 in The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis. For each work one could apply what Merleau-Ponty identified as a fundamental “reversibility” in vision, through the Lacanian scope of interpretation: Both perceiving and also being observed, the body is simultaneously a subject and an object. This reversibility and its implications over our everyday experience are being explored from different artists’ perspectives in painting, print, drawing, ceramics and photography.
Erica Allan fictional portraits Untitled Gentleman explore representations and constructions of identity in portraiture by combining anonymous found footage and discarded studio photographs, giving spotlight to fictional ordinary man. The Phantom Bounce prints by Kerry Downey poetically reference phantom limb syndrome, the ghost sensations following her and her mother’s double mastectomies. In her metonymic paintings, made from observation, Tryn Collins paintings from her everyday life gaze back at the observer. Leah Wolff juxtaposes the physical with our visual limitations as she interprets a two dimensional image into a three dimensional object. Hilary Doyle depicts the mobile phone focusing on the reflective screen and multiple cameras, directing our gaze over the physical environment.
