JIYOUNG (JEN) KIM
Ji Young(Jen) Kim is a thinker, dreamer, and maker who’s always pushing the boundaries of fiber art. Originally from South Korea, she is currently based in NYC. Her work is informed by my playful sensibility. In her life beyond the studio, Jiyoung usually progresses through her plans and ambitions in a stable way. However, in the studio, the creative process serves as a series of antidotes, liberating her from the compulsion to achieve this stability. In the absence of definitive answers, she crafts her own solutions, creating a sense of freedom and joy found within the process itself.
In tandem with the intrinsic characteristics of soft and flexible fibers, Jiyoung’s artistic exploration extends beyond conventional boundaries to encompass the vast possibilities encapsulated within hard fiber materials. The inclusion of hard fibers introduces a contrasting element that challenges the traditional notions associated with fiber art. This expansion marks a deliberate departure from the familiar terrain of “softness” and introduces a multidimensional and dynamic range of textures. Exploring the rigidity and durability of these fibers opens up a new realm of sculptural possibilities, allowing her to push the limits of form and structure.
Jiyoung holds a Bachelor of Fiber Arts from Ewha Womans University, South Korea and is currently a graduate student in the MFA Textiles program at Parsons School of Design.
