Dimana Zaharieva is a visual artist born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She received her B.A. degree in Art with an emphasis on painting and printmaking from San Diego State University in 2021 and is currently based in New York, NY. The primary media of her work are oil painting, drawing and digital.
Dimana Zaharieva’s work is inspired by the subconscious and the individual experience, with a focus on the human figure and portraiture. Her approach is largely led by intuitive drawing and journaling which translate to her larger works in the medium of oil painting. The themes she explores range from mental illness and her experience as a woman in the 21st century, to metaphysical notions such as multidimensionality and the concept of a multiverse. Continuously inspired by vivid dreams, she sees the possibility of engaging with the subconscious in a quest for self-discovery. The artist seeks to analyze and reform social constructs relating to womanhood in a way that empowers
the feminine aspect. The motivations for one’s actions and desires often manifest through conflicting values and ideals, internalized by the individual through their surrounding social environment. Zaharieva explores duality, specifically dialectics, as related to the self and the nature of the encompassing world. Her belief that there is no single truth, as everything is created and perceived through human subjectivity, opens the possibility for countless coexisting realities. An otherworldly ambience reflecting a
liminal, transitional quality is a common element in her pieces.
